Turkey censors textbooks that include word ‘Pennsylvania’

Turkey’s Religious Directorate-funded German mosque bans entry for Gülen followers
A mosque funded by Turkey’s Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) in the German city of Schweinfurt has banned entry to followers of the Gülen movement, inspired by the views of US-based Turkish scholar Fethullah Gülen, who the Turkish government accuses of masterminding a failed coup in July.
According to a decision made by the executive committee of the Schweinfurt Central Mosque on Dec. 17, members of FETO, a derogatory term and acronym for the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization, coined by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government to refer to the Gülen movement, will not be permitted to enter the mosque premises and the mosque membership of those determined to be FETO members will be cancelled.
“Entry banned for traitor and enemy of religion FETO members, supporters of Schweinfurt Central Mosque. The membership of those who are determined to be the members of the FETO terror organization will be cancelled,” a leaflet hung on the gate of the mosque stated.

Turkey’s pro-government media outlets and journalists on Tuesday were quick to put the blame on the US and the faith-based Gülen movement for the murder of the Russian ambassador to Turkey by a police officer on Monday evening.The gunman, Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş, chanted Islamist slogans also used by radical terrorist organization the Al Nusra Front after he shot Karlov to death at an art gallery in Ankara.Yet, many pro-government newspapers and columnists did not hesitate to label the gunman a member of “FETÖ,” a derogatory term the government coined to call the Gülen movement a terrorist organization, and also talked about the US role in the murder from their front pages on Tuesday.
Turkey paid TL 2.4 million in rewards to citizen-informants in 2016
Turkey has since beginning of this year paid a total of TL 2.4 million in rewards to citizens who have provided the state with useful information about others who are suspected of having committed a crime, according to figures from the Finance Ministry. The amount of money paid to informants in 2015 from the state budget was TL 1 million.
